투 명 한 사 회 Transparent Society

< WeavingLab. 2022 투명한 사회 >는 도시를 바라보는 또 다른 시각으로 ‘수용소, 감옥, 교도소’란 주제로 옛 광주교도소에서 출발한 현대사회의 권력과 통제에 대한 주제탐구를 진행하고자 했다. 옛 광주교도소는 역사적으로 비전향 장기수, 정치범 수용소로의 역할이 강했고 5·18사적지로 지정되어 있다.

정치적인 이유로 감금되었던 이들은 시대적 피해자로 보아야 하는 것인가, 시대에 가해를 한 세력으로 보아야 하는가. 지금 우리는 어떤 유형의 수용소에 있는가. 도처에 보이지 않는 감시탑이 존재해 통제를 받고 있는 우리 사회는 속이 다 드러나보이는 투명한 사회이다. 투명하다는 것은 진실되고 긍정적이라고 생각했던 과거의 생각은 광주교도소를 접하며 전복되었다.

우리는 발전된 기술로 인해 언제든지 누구에게나 연결시켜줄 수 있는 세상에 살고 있지만, 실재적 연결 즉 서로를 바라보며 이해하거나 신뢰하는 시간을 갖기는 쉽지 않다.

신뢰가 무너진 사회는 모든것을 들춰내어 정보화하고 이는 곧 자본에 의해 통제된다. 최소한의 보호막이 존재하지 않는 투명하게 모든 것이 드러나는 사회는 의심과 감시가 주를 이루는 사회로, 디지털 판옵티콘 시대에 사는 현대인으로써 스스로를 어떻게 지키면서 진정한 자유를 추구할 것인가에 대한 성찰적 계기를 마련하고자 한다.

모든 것이 투명해질 때 우리의 상상력 또한 저해될 것은 분명하다.

우리는 곧 사라질지 모를 장소에 다양한 시각적 해석을 더해 공론화 함으로써 이 장소의 미래를 함께 상상해보았다. 이는 시민사회로 전해져 더 큰 상상과 기대가 더해질 수 있기를 바란다. < WeavingLab. 2022 투명한 사회 >는 예술가와 연구자의 공동 리서치와 워크숍을 통해 공간, 인권, 감성을 연결하는 예술의 가능성을 실험하고 향후 광주의 중요한 공간 및 건축물에 대한 협력적인 아카이브 작업의 초석이 될 수 있기를 기대한다.

Under the theme of “Detention Center, Jail, Prison,” “Weaving Lab. 2022: Transparent Society” offers a different perspective of looking at the city, and attempts to explore the topic of power and control of modern society, starting from the old Gwangju Prison. The old Gwangju Prison historically played a major role as a concentration camp for long-term non-converted prisoners and political prisoners, and is designated as a historical May 18 site. Should those who were imprisoned for political reasons be seen as victims of the times or as forces that harmed the times? What type of camp are we now in?

Our society, which is controlled by invisible watchtowers everywhere, is a transparent society in which the inside is clearly visible. The former thought that being transparent was sincere and positive was upended upon encountering Gwangju Prison.

We live in a world where we can connect with anyone at any time due to advanced technology, but it is not easy to find time for real connections in which we can look at, understand, or trust each other. A society in which trust has crumbled exposes and digitizes everything, and in the end is controlled by capital. A society in which everything is revealed transparently without a minimal protective shield is a society dominated by suspicion and surveillance. As a modern person living in the digital panopticon era, we want to provide an opportunity for all to reflect on how to pursue true freedom while protecting ourselves. When everything becomes transparent, it is clear that our imagination will also be stifled.

We envisioned the future of this place together and publicized by adding various visual interpretations to places that may soon disappear and then drawing attention to it. It is hoped that this will be passed on to society in general and that greater imagination and expectations can be added.

“Weaving Lab. 2022 Transparent Society” experiments with the possibilities of art in connecting space, human rights, and emotion through joint research and workshops between artists and researchers. It is hoped that it will serve as a cornerstone for collaborative archiving of important spaces and buildings in Gwangju in the future.

현장답사 Field Trip

전남대학교 5・18연구소의 협력으로 옛광주교도소 출입이 가능했다. 2015년 10월 교도소 이전 이후 비워져 방치된 이 장소는 풀과 나무가 무성하게 자라나 있었고, 굶주린 모기떼의 습격으로 곤혹을 치러야 했다. 모든 지하공간은 물에 잠겨있어 스산한 분위기가 극대화 되었다.

전주교도소 교도대 출신인 조상현 박사를 초청하여 현장답사를 하며 교정, 교화를 목표로 한 교도소의 공간적 특징과 운영관리체계에 대한 워크숍을 진행하였다.

We were granted permission to enter the old Gwangju Prison through the cooperation of the May 18th Research Institute of Chonnam National University. The site, which has remained deserted since the prison was relocated in October 2015, was overgrown with grass and trees, plagued by swarms of hungry mosquitoes, and all underground spaces were submerged in water, maximizing the eerie atmosphere. Dr. Cho Sang-hyun, a former Jeonju Prison guard, was invited to accompany the field trip and explained the spatial characteristics of the prison for the purposes of correction and rehabilitation and its operation and management system.

리서치&워크숍 Research & Workshop

인문사회과학 참여연구진(박경섭, 유경남, 정수남)을 주축으로 연구주제인 ‘역사’와 ‘개발계획’ 그리고 ‘감정사회학적 독해’에 대한 소개와 연구방향에 대해 워크숍을 진행하였다. 그 과정에서 발굴된 여러 자료는 참여작가들에게 공유하였고, 전남대학교 사회학과 교수이자 감옥 연구 전문가인 최정기 교수님을 초청하여 감옥의 존재이유와 체제 등 규율권련과 욕망의 탈주에 대한 이해를 더할 수 있었다.

Led by the participating researchers in the humanities and social sciences (Park Kyung-seop, Yoo Kyung-nam, Jung Su-nam), a workshop was held on the introduction and research direction of the research topics of 'History', 'Development Plan', and 'Emotional Sociological Reading’. Various materials unearthed in the process were shared with the participating artists. Guest speaker Professor Choi Jung-gi, a sociology professor at Chonnam National University and prison research expert, provided further explanation of the reason of existence of a prison and its system, as well as the disciplinary power and the desire to escape.

창제작 Created Works

참여작가 김자이(설치미디어), 김현돈(가상조각), 배수민(조각), 최성욱(다큐감독)는 각각 현장채집 사진, 3D가상조각, 영상으로 결과물을 도출했다. 현장답사와 워크숍을 통해 관심주제를 심화한 리서치를 진행하며 예술적 해석을 시도하였다. 참여연구진 박경섭(문화인류학), 유경남(사회학), 정수남(사회학)은 워크숍에서 소개한 주제를 완성하여 ‘광주교도소 부지 관련 계획과 상상’, ‘Re 옛광주교도소 view’, ‘감옥, 감정통치의 극지-옛 광주교도소 공간에 대한 감정사회학적 독해-’를 발표하였다. 특히 연구주제관련 영상작업을 시도하며 이해와 접근성에 용이하도록 시도하였다.

Participating artists Kim Jyai(installation media), Kim Hyun-don(virtual sculpture), Bae Soo-min(sculpture), and Choi Seong-uk(documentary director) produced on-site photographs, 3D virtual sculptures, and videos respectively. Intense research on topics of interest and artistic interpretations were attempted through field trips and workshops.

Participating researchers, Park Kyung-seop(Cultural Anthropology), Yoo Kyung-nam(Sociology), and Jung Su-nam(Sociology) completed the topics introduced in the workshop and made presentations on the 'Planning and Imagination Regarding the Gwangju Prison Site', 'Old Gwangju Prison View', and 'Prison, the Polar Ground of Emotional Governance – An Emotional Sociological Reading of the Old Gwangju Prison Space'. In particular, a video work regarding the research topics was attempted for easier understanding and accessibility.
