현장답사 Field Trip

5・18국제연구원 협력으로 캠코(한국자산관리공사)의 허가를 받아 8월부터 9월까지 여러차례 현장을 답사하며 기록하고, 현장작업을 진행하였다. 비워진 채 방치된 공간은 일 년 사이에 더욱 노후해 공기마저 무겁게 다가왔다. 여전한 굶주린 모기떼와 어느 한 곳 기대거나 앉을 곳이 없을 만큼 높다란 흙먼지 그리고 무성한 수풀들이 우리를 맞이했다. 인근 아파트가 완공되어 옛 광주교도소 출입문 인근부지에 철망 펜스가 생겼고, 혐오시설 방치란 이유의 민원이 늘었다고 한다.

With the cooperation of the May 18 International Research Center, who helped obtain permission from the Korea Asset Management Corporation(KAMCO), we visited the site many times during August and September to record and carry out on-site work. The empty deserted space had further deteriorated over the past year, and even the air become heavy. We were still greeted by swarms of hungry mosquitoes, overgrown bushes, and layers of dirt that prevented sitting or leaning on any surface. Nearby apartments had been completed, a wire mesh fence built on the site near the entrance gate, and it is said that complaints about the neglect had increased.

워크숍&리서치 Workshops & Research

2022년에 참여한 연구진(박경섭, 유경남, 정수남)을 초청하여 연구주제에 대한 소개와 경험들을 공유하는 워크숍을 진행했다. 참여작가 개인별 관심주제로 세분화되며 추가적 리서치가 필요했고, 이에 연구진들의 도움으로 다양한 자료가 공유되었다. 작품의 주제는 달라도 디지털 판옵티콘 시대에 디지털 매체를 적극 활용해 이 시대의 권력과 통제 시스템을 점검하고자 하는 프로젝트의 목표에 대한 공감은 일치했으며 자칫 의도와 달리 미화되거나 옹호될 여지를 차단하고자 하는 논의가 여러 차례 진행되었다.

The researchers who participated in 2022 (Park Kyung-seop, Yoo Kyung-nam, Jung Su-nam) were invited to introduce the themes and share their experiences. Additional research was required as the themes became refined and further subdivided into each participating artist’s respective area of interest, and various data was shared with the help of the researchers. Although the themes of the works were different, there was a consensus on the project's goal of examining the systems for maintaining power and control of this era, by actively using digital media in the era of digital panopticons, and much discussion went into ensuring the project could not be misinterpreted as of perceived glorification or advocacy for the prison, which would run contrary to the project’s intention.

창제작 Created Works

참여작가 별 창제작 진행단계에서 서울, 대구 등지에서 작가미팅을 진행하며 웹VR적용 방식과 작품내용에 대한 정보를 공유하였다. 작품의 특성상 외부링크로 연결되는 경우 매개체적 이미지를 추가하기로 했고, 작품내용과 관련해 작품 배치 장소에 대한 논의도 병행되었다. 그 결과 사진, 3D조각, 디지털페인팅 애니메이션, 현장설치영상, VR영상, 아트게임으로, 감시탑 사이의 장벽, 후생동, 여성수용동, 기결사동, 보안청사, 등에 배치해 각 작품의 내용적 연결을 완성하였다.

In the creative production stage for each artist, artist meetings were held in Seoul, Daegu and so on to share information on the Web VR application method and the content of the work. Due to the nature of the work, it was decided to add a mediating image when referring to an external link, and discussions were also held regarding where to locate the works in relation to the content. As a result, the connection of each work’s content was completed by its location: positioning photographs, 3D sculptures, a digital painting animation, on-site installation videos, a VR video and an art game across selected locations such as the barrier between the watchtowers, the welfare building, women’s detention block, main detention block, security building and the like.
