< Transparent Society > of WeavingLab.2022-2023 explored the theme of power and control in contemporary society.
Seeking another way of looking at the city, the starting point was the former Gwangju Prison (May 18 Historic Site No. 22), with the theme of “Detention Camp, Jail, and Prison”. At the prison site, we experienced a spatial layout optimized for surveillance and control, and actively used digital media in the era of the digital panopticon to set up a virtual community space. Through this, we hope to trigger contemplation on the concepts of power and control, surveillance and punishment, and discipline and oppression in this era.
WeavingLab.2022 was held with the participation of artists Kim Jayi, Kim Hyun-don, Bae Soo-min, and Choi Seong-uk, who set the former Gwangju Prison in a virtual space and presented artistic records and interpretations through photographs, 3D sculptures, and video works. An interesting result was produced that both the space and the works were unified in black and white, although there had been no prior consultation or intention of this. In particular, researchers in humanities and social sciences Park Kyung-seop, Yoo Kyung-nam, and Jung Su-nam worked together to record the results of their work in their respective texts and videos, and attempted to share their thoughts beyond the realm of academia.
WeavingLab.2023 sought to experiment with the results, concepts, and artistic expansion of previous projects, and added artists from Daegu, Busan, and Seoul to the project. The six teams of Kwon Hae-il, Kim Si-heun, Alex sun-ju Park, Jung Seo-on, Jueng Hyejin × Jo Mal, and Cha You-na undertook thematic research and artistic interpretation to create a VR public art project featuring photography, 3D sculpture, VR video, digital painting and animation, on-site installation media collage, and an art game.
